Tent First Aid, Bugs, Sun, and Wildlife Readiness

First aid, tick tools, insect protection, sun care, bear spray, snake awareness, and campsite medical readiness.

Where this gear earns its space

Tent camping puts people closer to ticks, mosquitoes, spiders, snakes, poison plants, heat, cold, and minor burns. The first aid kit should match that reality.

Bug protection is layered: repellent, clothing, treated gear where appropriate, tent mesh, tick checks, and keeping doors zipped.

Bear spray is a last-resort wildlife-defense tool in bear country, not a camp perimeter product and not a substitute for food storage.

Failure points to plan around

  • Check whether bear spray is legal and allowed where you are traveling.
  • Seek medical care for venomous or possibly venomous snake bites; do not cut, suck, or tourniquet the wound.
  • Personal defense devices such as stun guns or tasers are restricted in many jurisdictions and can create legal or safety problems in camp.

Match the kit to the vehicle, season, and region

Do not let the calendar make the decision for you. Extreme heat can happen in parts of the desert Southwest, south Texas, Florida, and lower-elevation public lands during winter travel, while high mountains, northern forests, exposed desert basins, and coastal storm zones can turn cold or windy during the height of summer.

Match gear to the actual overnight low, daytime heat index, wind exposure, shade, water availability, road surface, wildfire or smoke risk, and the vehicle you brought. A motorhome, travel trailer, truck camper, car camp, and tent site can all face the same weather system differently.
